I’m a HUGE fan of garter stitch projects, but even I recognise that sometimes you need just a little bit of extra visual interest in a project that garter stitch alone just can’t give.
With the Bonfire Night scarf, I’ve worked a simple repeating pattern of knits and purls. This stitch combination creates a beautiful subtle column effect up the scarf, giving the project just a tiny smidge of extra texture that would be missing with just Garter Stitch.

Pairing the stitch pattern with a variegated yarn helps to highlight the slightly offset stitches. However, you still get a very striking visual effect if you choose to use a solid shade of yarn for your project.
This scarf is just a ONE ROW repeat, so if you are a beginner this is the perfect project for you to tackle once you’ve mastered the basics and can confidently knit and purl.

If you need visual help to knit this pattern, I also have a YouTube tutorial that guides you through the repeat in easy steps.
sizing and yarn
My scarf measures approximately 23cm across, and 180cm long. I find this the perfect size for me to wear, but feel free to make the scarf any size you like.
You can make it wider by using the pattern multiple of 8 + 6 to cast on more stitches, and to make it longer you simply keep knitting until the length of the scarf is what you want.

You can of course choose to knit this scarf in any yarn you like. Just remember to make sure you adjust the amount of stitches you cast on to accomodate the yarn weight you are using.
You will also need to make sure you cast on using the correct sized needles for the weight of yarn you have chosen. Your ball band will always guide you in the direction of the right size needles.
