How to Knit Flag Stitch

Flag stitch is a 6 row pattern repeat creates these effective little flag motifs in a grid pattern. It is a reversible pattern that makes it great for projects that need to look good on both sides (perhaps a wash cloth when combined with a simple garter stitch edging?)

It does have a tendency to concertina in a little bit from the sides when unblocked, so I would always recommend a light blocking if you were wanting a project that lays totally flat.

WRITTEN PATTERN

Pattern Multiple - Cast on multiples of 7+1 using your preferred cast on method.

Pattern Repeat:

  • Row 1: *k1, p1, k5* repeat from *to* until 1 stitch remains, k1
  • Row 2: p1, *p4, k2, p1* repeat from *to* until end of row.
  • Row 3: *k1, p3, k3* repeat from *to* until 1 stitch remains, k1
  • Row 4: p1, *p2, k4, p1* repeat from *to* until end of row.
  • Row 5: *k1, p5, k1* repeat from *to* until 1 stitch remains, k1
  • Row 6: p1, *k6,p1* repeat from *to* until end of row,

Repeat rows 1-6 until project is desired size. Cast off in pattern during a row 6 repeat.
